History of the association
The initiative to start some form of permanent co-operation among alpine towns was initiated by the Town Hall offices of Trento, Italy, who organised a first meeting in the autumn of 1986 to discuss common problems. To ensure that co-operation can continue regularly, the Town Hall offices of Trento offer premises, personnel, office equipment etc.
The association was officially created in the autumn of 1988.
Since1994, the Comunitą has published "Cittą delle Alpi - info", which appears in the four official languages of the Comunitą: French, German, Italian and Slovenian.
The association has recently become a registered charity.
Relationship with other public bodies
The association maintains regular contacts with the following groups:
- Convention for the Protection of the Alps
- A.E.M. (Associazione Eletti della Montagna)
- CIPRA Internazionale
- "Alpine town of the year" (an Association founded by the town of Villach, Austria).
